Black History Month Concert

Our students gathered today to take part in celebrating and honoring Black history through a spoken word and musical performance.

The 3rd Grade student performed "Eye On the Prize." Based on the Spiritual "Hold On", it was a Freedom Song during the Civil Rights movement (no known composer).  The “prize” in the song is equal rights for all people.

The 4th and 5th students sang "Keep your Lamps Trimmed and Burning", a spiritual with no known composer.  "Keep your Lamps" was sung during the time of slavery to express spiritual devotion as well as a way of sharing a plan of escape.

The 6th Grade students sang "Bring Me Little Water, Sylvie", a traditional American folk song attributed to the Blues Musician Huddie Lead Belly.

Our 7th Grade students performed "Lean on Me" by Bill Withers.  Withers wrote "Lean on Me" after he had moved to Los Angeles and found himself missing the strong community ethic of his hometown.
